trans | just curious...

is the term "transvestite" considered appropriate when describing anybody anymore? i know it's not good when describing someone who identifies as a gender other than the one that they were assigned about birth...but what if they do identify as the gender they were assigned, and just like dressing in the clothing of the opposite gender? if the only thing trans about them is the way they like to dress, is the term "transvestite" appropriate then? i'm writing a paper on cross-dressing in the 1950s, and the term has come up a lot, so it's been on my mind.
