VIGIL TO REMEMBER VICTIMS OF ANTI-TRANSGENDER HATE CRIMES


A candlelight vigil will be held on Wednesday, November 20 to commemorate the lives and mourn the deaths of a reported 24 victims of anti-transgender hate crimes. The vigil will be held on the west side of the Capitol Reflecting Pool beginning at 4:30pm. The Reflecting Pool is located on 3rd Street NW between Jefferson and Madison Drives. The nearest Metro station is Federal Center SW.

The Transgender Day Of Remembrance began in San Francisco in 1999 as a response to the murder of Rita Hester, a transgendered woman who was stabbed to death in her apartment. This year events will be held in 19 states and the District of Columbia and 5 countries.

The speakers at the Washington, DC vigil include:

SERVICE TO REMEMBER VICTIMS OF ANTI-TRANSGENDER HATE CRIMES



As part of the National Day of Remembrance memorializing victims of transgender hate crimes, a community service will be held on Friday, November 22, at 8:00 p.m. at the Parish Hall of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore. The Parish Hall of First Unitarian Church is located in the 500 block of N. Charles St.

Twenty-seven transgender individuals known to be murdered during the past year will be remembered in a candlelight service, organized by Free State Justice through its MATTER [Marylanders Advocating Towards Transgender Equal Rights] Committee. FSJ is working for civil rights protections prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression in housing, employment and public accommodations in Maryland. Tammy Lippert and Courtney Murphy, Co-Chairs of MATTER, will lead the service. The program also includes speakers from the Baltimore transgender community and local community leaders.

The Rev. David Smith, of the Metropolitan Community Church of Baltimore, will honor the memory of Tacy Ranta, a beloved transgender activist, murdered in Baltimore on Nov. 22, 1999. Ms. Ranta was the spokesperson for It's Time, Maryland! and co-founder of Tran*Quility, a transgender support group in Baltimore.
