Public discussion of Social Psychology terminalogy and diagnosis.
So this morning I read through one of the posts on here over Andrea James, blog on Boingboing. Found here:
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/01/07/toronto-global-epice.html
I read through blog looked up Dr. Zucker whom Andrea explicitly mentions, researched his methods watch as many videos I could on the subject. So my problem comes in that I have a back ground in engineering, Social-Psychology, and Mental Health. So it seems our community is divided on the American Medical Associations designation and classification Gender Identity Disorder.
So never personally had a problem with it, as I approached it that there was a dysphoria associated with our current gender identity (in some cases) and steps can be made to bring those diagnosed to healthy out come through steps.
I seems some see it in a differently light, that our self identified gender is considered a disorder. That we are mentally ill. Still others feel that no diagnosis should be placed what so ever as some cannot afford therapy and there for cannot get access to hormones ect. because of Standards of care.
I would like to know were others stand on this, as I am very aware my background bias's me toward the communities view.
