TransGender Michigan Needs Your Help!

Dear Friend:

We at TransGender Michigan are excited to announce that, because of our expansive knowledge and experience in educating about transgender issues, we have been invited to present a workshop at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Creating Change Conference, which will be held in St. Louis, Missouri this November. The Creating Change Conference is an annual event that provides comprehensive workshops on a variety of topics of importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and is known by many as the best opportunity for professional development for LGBT activists in the country.

TransGender Michigan has made great strides this year. In addition to being asked to present a workshop at the Creating Change Conference, we were also delighted to present two workshops at the Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Ally College Conference in February. We produced three additional educational brochures, one for significant others of transgender people, one regarding the history of transgender activism, and one focused on the Transgender Day of Remembrance. In order to provide additional support to our community, TransGender Michigan enhanced our telephone support services through a 24-hour hotline. We were named as a runner-up as "Most Effective LGBT Organization" by the readers of Between the Lines and received the Cultural Award at this year’s Pride Banquet. These honors are emblematic of the pride which TransGender Michigan takes in its efforts, knowing that it is making a name and a positive reputation for itself while striving to increase opportunities for all.

Upon reflection of these successes, I am filled with such satisfaction and gratitude to have played a role in helping Michigan to become a state in which transgender individuals are free from violence, harassment, discrimination and inequality. TransGender Michigan has come so far since its inception in 1997. We have evolved from an online clearinghouse for transgender information and events in Michigan into an organization that provides a multitude of services and programs such as:

§ A Speakers Bureau that is available to speak with various groups, conduct advocacy training and answer questions related to issues facing transgender communities.

§ Support via telephone, email or support group setting, whenever a member of our communities needs help.

§ Community-building events such as the TransGender Michigan Pride Picnic & Transgender Awareness Day.

§ Involvement in the Transgender Day of Remembrance in the Lansing and Detroit Areas.

§ An exciting traveling discussion forum entitled “LeT’s ChaT AbouT…” This forum allows transgender individuals, allies, significant others, friends, and family from around the state of Michigan the opportunity to discuss a variety of specific topics of need and interest to the transgender community.

§ Co-sponsorship of a Transgender Town Hall Meeting with the Human Rights Campaign.

§ Acting as a driving force behind the addition of transgender identity to the anti-discrimination policy of City of East Lansing, Michigan.

These are just few of the services we intend to provide, as we are constantly focused on improvement. In the 2004-2005 Fiscal Year, we will:

§ Improve our Educational Services by developing additional literature, expanding our Speakers Bureau, and reaching out to groups, business, organizations, and individuals to encourage them to learn more about transgender concerns.

§ Further develop Speakers Bureau curriculum through the creation of at least five different specialized presentations (capsules).

§ Host a town hall meeting discussing the ways the proposed Marriage Amendment will impact the transgender community.

§ Attend sensitivity trainings to better understand the interactions of oppressions, the barriers we unconsciously construct, to learn about the ways we can make TransGender Michigan an organization in which all identities are honored, respected, and appreciated, and to learn about the ways we can teach others in our community about this knowledge.

TransGender Michigan needs your assistance to accomplish these and other objectives, perhaps most urgently in helping us to educate LGBT activists across the country at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Creating Change Conference about transgender identity and issues of importance to the transgender community. The Creating Change Conference will also provide our Board of Directors and Staff the opportunity to further develop their skills by attending workshops at the conference, which, in turn, means that we can put these newly acquired skills to work for you. Please send us your tax-deductible donation to help us spread the message across the nation that transgender people and their significant others, families, friends, and allies deserve respect and equality. Know that whatever you’re able to give, your donation is appreciated and timely.

Sincerely,

Rachel K. Crandall, MSW

Executive Director
