I have dual nationality, and was born, live and currently attend university outside of America. I am aware that it is possible to handle passport renewal by post or at the embassy in London; are there postable forms to use to make alterations to one's passport and/or social security information?

Is it possible to have gender-/sex-related information stricken from such profiles (or replaced with 'N/A' or an equivalent), rather than switched from one pole to another? Particularly if race-related information is not displayed, it seems as though gender-/sex-related information as well should not be. In practice, what do intersex or otherwise effectively gender-neutral individuals do?

Other than passport information and social security information, are there any other government databases which store relevant information to be changed/erased?

Are there available online step-by-step instructions for the procedures for altering the information of these two and any other records of significance?

I can look at my passport but, though I know my social security number, if 'social security information' exists how may I go about looking at it to find out what it is?

Thank you very much for your time.

comments

How has it been to get passports for those of you that have went out of state? i know that there are diff. laws in diff. states, but just the general adventure *or lack there of* that anyone has been through. I've been looking at Suporn for sometime *too bad Reed's has such a horrible rep.* and I'm turning my eyes back to him. I'm not sure how to go about the passport deal though. Before or after name change? While still living under the radar for several circumstances? After going full time? Not sure what would work best. Stories & suggestions would be great. ^^

comments

I've never actually gotten a passport before, so the one I'm filing for right now is my first one ever. I'm really excited, but of course mother dearest is panicking that someone's going to make my life hell (thats really the only thing she's ever concerned about with me being transgendered, is that someone out there is going to hurt her baby lol). So the first question is really so I can tell her I'd asked someone who has gone through the process and calm her for a second lol. She seems to be under the impression that, because I'm legally male, they'll probably want me to look male when I travel. Yay or nay? I didn't think that would be an issue considering you can't legally change the "M" monicker on your passport until you can prove you've had SRS and I'm sure not every pre-op transgendered MTF has had to travel as a boy lol. She's taking me to New York and she's so damn excited about it and doesn't want it to not happen lol.

And the second one is for me lol. I took my passport photos yesterday and one of the requirements is no hats/head coverings, and by head coverings I'm sure they mean scarves and things like that, but would they have a problem with wigs? I mean, I live day in and day out in them because mine is still recovering from that pesky male pattern issue so it doesn't make me look different than when I'd be travelling. And I've gotten on cross-Canada flights with my photo-ID with a wig on and my ID photo still being more masculine looking (its older and frankly I've been too lazy to get a new one), mostly because I'm open about the fact that I wear wigs and often lift it up when people question my identity haha.

Thanks!!

comments

I decided it could benefit from a wider audience.

It has until recently been the case that a transsexual citizen of Australia could have issued to them a passport showing their 'intended sex', on condition that they demonstrated their intention to have surgical reassignment within a year - after which time the passport, being temporary only, would expire. If they have had satisfactory surgery they could then obtain a permanent passport.

Since May, this law has been changed. Since May it is no longer legal to grant a passport showing a sex other than that listed in the person's 'cardinal document' (to the best of my knowledge, their birth certificate or, I am guessing, whatever documentation an immigrant is issued when they are granted citizenship). This document cannot legally be changed until after proof of genital reassignment surgery is presented. Consequently any transsexual person who wishes to travel overseas, for whatever reason, including the surgery in question and including attending a family member's marriage and including a desire to see Stonehenge, will be required to travel with documentation specifying their sex to be other than in the manner they present themselves, or to apply for a limited-duration Document of Identity which does not specify gender at all.

This does not seem, to me, to be the safest of situations, although the purpose of this change was ostensibly to "strengthen the integrity and security of Australian passports". I suspect the news stories about the flood of terrorists slipping into the country under passports showing a different sex has passed me by unnoticed. Can anyone think of a way in which this changes accomplishes the goal it is claimed to have? Because to me it sure looks like its main effect is to increase people's risk of harm and harassment, which is an awful thing to do.

The articles I am getting most of this information from include speculation that the real motive is to prevent people from exploiting the previous system to bypass the federal ban on non-straight marriage. They include reference to the case of a woman suing the federal government for refusing to grant her a female passport because she is still legally married to a woman. They also, incidentally, point out that the Australian position was already a violation of international law.

Thanks to laura_seabrook for bringing this to my attention. It puts me in mind of another post I have been meaning to make and which may appear in the near future.

comments
