My church, a Unitarian Universalist church, is in the process of looking for a new minister, so we are trying for the first time to conduct a sort of census to see where exactly our church stands. One of the questions considered is about gender, and there's a sticky point. There are people who want to offer just "male or female" (saying that a transgender person does not proclaim transgendered-ness all the time) and others who want to offer "male, female, or transgender." If the transgender option is included, there is still the question of whether or not to specify FTM or MTF. Since none of these people knows a transgender person they're all sort of guessing.

Even though I am not transgender, I am very active in the GLBT community as a member of that group and as an activist, which is why my opinion was asked in the first place. But since I'm not transgender, I don't feel comfortable answering for the community, which is why I'm asking you guys. If you were in our place, what options would you provide on the survey?

Thanks for answering. We just want to make sure we know who is in our church community so we can care for everyone properly.
