Thanks to the mods for approving this. I have an unusual request for this comm, as far as I can tell, and would appreciate any help you can offer!

I am currently helping a friend of mine write a fanfiction story (Sherlock BBC fandom) that involves a character who is ftm. The story is for an exchange, so the identity of the author must be kept secret until it is released by the comm mods.

We're wanting a critique by at least one person (more would be wonderful) who is familiar with transgender issues, and can tell us whether or not the story/character interactions ring true to them. It would be great, but not necessary, if volunteers are a) familiar with/like fanfiction, preferably Sherlock, and b) can critique coherently.

We basically want insiders' perspectives to make sure we're treating the subject with the sensitivity it deserves. This is the first time either of us have written a trans* character. We've done some research, but it's hard to get the specific answers we need from general overviews and such.

The basics of the story: It's currently a WiP, and it's shorter: 2,500 words, mostly likely to end up around 4,000. It is male/male/male slash (yes, there is a threesome). There are some minor d/s themes. It needs to be turned in by the 29th of December, so there is a limited time frame for volunteers.

Please message me if you're interested. Or if you want to leave some advice in comments, please feel free to do so!

Thank you for your time!

Edit: So many responses! Thank you all for volunteering.

Edit the 2nd: I have no idea whether people are tracking this post, but I thought I might as well place it here. The story is up! You can find it here: http://sesa.zvilikestv.net/2012/, the title is The Shape of You.

The Trans Bill takes effect July 1

BY GAY & LESBIAN ADVOCATES & DEFENDERS

Posted courtesy of Bay Windows

On November 23, 2011, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law H3810, An Act Relative to Gender Identity. This law adds “gender identity” as a protected characteristic to Massachusetts’ employment, housing, credit and public education anti-discrimination laws and to Massachusetts’ hate crimes law. All of these laws also protect several other characteristics, including sexual orientation, disability, sex, age, race, ancestry and religion, but this publication focuses on the transgender protections that H3810 provides. The law goes into effect on July 1, 2012.

GLAD Publishes Groundbreaking Transgender Family Law Book
Resource for practitioners to foster quality representation for transgender clients

Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders is proud to announce the publication of Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy, the first book to comprehensively address legal issues facing transgender people in the family law context and provide practitioners the tools to effectively represent transgender clients. Featuring chapters by attorneys with expertise in both family law and transgender legal advocacy, the book was edited by Jennifer L. Levi , director of GLAD’s Transgender Rights Project, and Elizabeth E. Monnin-Browder, a litigation associate in the Boston office of Ropes & Gray and a former GLAD attorney. Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy will be available in bound and electronic versions on May 16, 2012.

“Some of the most heartbreaking stories I have heard in my career as an LGBT legal advocate involve transgender people in family courts,” said Levi, a nationally recognized expert on transgender legal issues. “The rights of transgender people – as parents, spouses, and simply as human beings – are often trammeled in family court because of pervasive bias and misunderstanding. Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy is a road map for transgender individuals and their attorneys to navigate the family court system in this evolving area of law.”

“This book tackles a cutting edge area of family law and we’re thrilled to have contributions from some of this country’s most well-respected experts in this field,” said Monnin-Browder. “Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy details the unique needs and vulnerabilities of transgender people in the family law context. I hope transgender people will read and share it with their attorneys as they plan a family, navigate the dissolution of a relationship or a custody dispute, or simply seek to protect their rights and those of their children.”

The chapters address a broad range of topics, including:

* Culturally Competent Representation
* Recognition of Name and Sex
* Relationship Recognition and Protections
* Protecting Parental Rights
* Relationship Dissolution
* Parental Rights after Relationship Dissolution
* Custody Disputes Involving Transgender Children
* Protections for Transgender Youth
* Intimate Partner Violence
* Estate Planning and Elder Law

In addition to chapters authored by Levi and Monnin-Browder, contributors to Transgender Family Law: A Guide to Effective Advocacy include Kylar W. Broadus, Patience Crozier, Benjamin L. Jerner, Michelle B. LaPointe, Morgan Lynn, Shannon Price Minter, Zack M. Paakkonen, Terra Slavin, Wayne A. Thomas Jr., Esq., Deborah H. Wald and Janson Wu.

I've noticed several posts recently by undergrad researchers, looking for people to join their studies.

But what areas would WE like to see studied? If you could fund research, or even do it yourself, what would you look at?

Hello All,

I've been sitting on this manuscript for a while, and I finally decided to just publish it myself. In general, I am all for cutting out the middle-man. I don't think there is enough fiction out there written by trans people. Memoirs, yes, but novels, not so much- particularly about the trans issues of the "facebook generation", if you will. And so I proudly present:

"Funny, cynical, tough, vulnerable, honest, deluded, sagacious, self-loving and self-loathing, Refuse is irresistible." -Mark Simpson, author of Saint Morrissey, It's A Queer World, Metrosexy.

It's cheap, and you can get an ebook or paperback. Free sample too, on the ebook site- and if you like the sample and really don't like forking over your money, shoot me and email and I'll give the book to you for free. elliottdeline@gmail.com. It's been 3 years in the making, and I just want readers!

I tagged this as controversial because 1.  it might be against the rules to self promote and 2. some of the stuff said by characters in the book might not be to everyone's taste.

But if you wanna check it out, that would be awesome.

Cheers,
E

I've been participating in [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc (read 50 books by people of color) and I'd like to include some trans authors of color. Who are some that you'd recommend? (Any trans* identity is fine, but trans women of color would be especially welcome since my reading list has been a bit low on women so far.)

Hey all! I've got a bit of a story (that gets a little ranty) and a related request.

First, the story. )

My request is this: based on the things she's worried about ("knowing" and HRT, mainly), does anybody have...
A) Any bookmarks or links to reliable studies and information on these subjects?
B) Any tips for my own Googling - what I should look for and avoid?

His mother is very science-minded and I think might believe anything that a study tells her is true. Hard facts and extensive research studies are ideal, but I've no clue where to start looking for all this. We're hoping that if we can give her enough information, enough reason for her to believe that we're serious about this, that she'll stop pestering us about it and may actually help out. Anything available on the internet is also ideal, as we don't have a lot of resources for other things, but book titles may also work, since I can pass them along as recommended reading.

Any help at all is appreciated, and thanks for sitting through all this!

Can anyone recommend fiction books dealing with FTMs/masculine genderqueers in the same vein as Stone Butch Blues?
[identity profile] aubreycolors.livejournal.com
Can you recommend any amazing trans-related blogs that are out anywhere on the Internet?
[identity profile] kynn.livejournal.com
Can anyone provide any references to fiction written by trans authors featuring trans characters?

I'm not looking for non-fiction tell-all books or stuff about trans theory/activism/whatever, but just fiction written by trans authors, from a trans perspective, about the trans experience.

Note: I'm specifically not asking for books by cis authors about trans characters.

When I first read Julia Serano's Whipping Girl a year or so ago I, like many people, was blown away. It seemed - still seems - to be saying all kinds of things about trans issues that no one else was saying that clearly, and creating a new vocabulary at the same time. How did we live all those years without "oppositional sexism"?

In other words, I was very impressed. And I was pleased to see other people in this community and others speaking highly of it too. At the same time, I was surprised there hadn't been more critical discussion of its many ideas, because even I felt in a few places that some of its contentions were at least debatable or in need of development (the concept of subconscious sex, for example), and when a book begins to be mentioned as if it were holy writ I get a little uncomfortable. (Of course, maybe there were all kinds of discussions happening that I wasn't aware of, but there you go.)

If anyone else feels the same, may I recommend the series of posts by aqueertheory that have been going up at Below the Belt over the last few weeks? They're here: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV. They present a sympathetic critique, and articulate a few problems with Serano's ideas (though none fatal, I'd say) that had been lurking at the back of my own mind. Mostly, though, I think it's an excellent chance to move the discussion on from Serano's own landmark book.

Today I had cause to look at the website for my county's website. They actually had a link to a GLBT section with a number of books hi-lighted, generally split into fiction and non-fiction. I don't read much fiction but I do read non-fiction. I clicked on the list and checked out what they listed as GLBT non-fiction.

Surprise surprise - the T was invisible. Not a single book dedicated to the T part.

BUT you can request that they buy books. This is their form:

Title:
Publisher:
Publication date:
ISBN/manufacturers number
Where did you find out about it?
Subject suggestion:
Why would this be a good addition to our stock:

Any suggestions? Having noticed this I would like to suggest at least one book so I can point out their lack of notice of the T in GLBT. I do use my local library a lot so this isn't just some political exercise for me.

I just picked up The Riddle of Gender by Deborah Rudacille. Anyone read this? It looks like a good interesting read, the books about ftm were hard to come by, but I found two, this one and The Testosterone Files but I could only afford one of them right now.

Anybody read it and got an opinion, good or bad?

Just reading and enjoying 'Evolutions Rainbow'...has anyone any suggestions as to other scripts to keep me occupied over the holidays?

Hope you are well

Has anyone read the book, "Stone Butch Blues" by Leslie Feinberg?  I went to the bookstore today and purchased it because I thought it looked interesting, does anyone else have any opinions on it? I'm curious to know different viewpoints so that I'll have more things to think about as I'm reading this book.

Hi gang!

The LGBT campus group that I volunteer with recently got a donation to upgrade the books in our library.  If anyone has any suggestions for books that you have found useful, I'd really appreciate it!

Cheers,

Randee.

I need some references to websites/blogs/etc with good trans-related news. It's one thing to get angry and motivated about fighting those who are vehemently against us, or showing up the transphobia in the world, however it gets horribly depressing and some stories may trigger trauma for some.

Any ideas?

I was wondering if there are any books/movies out there about FTM gay men/boys?
