I was just cruising around the web and came upon a news article stating that Maxwell passed away on Thursday...due to brain cancer.
It is a great loss to this community.

Is there a site that lists every known case (with citation and links) of murderers being let off easy for killing trans persons? I'm very interested in having case numbers and hard data to research, not so much general info.

thanks

Fuck not again...when will it end?

*Trigger Warning*
The following article is about the murder of one DC area transwoman and the non-fatal stabbing of another. Read with caution.

I have some sad news for the community.  I don't expect any of you knew her, but a transwoman named Lucille died this weekend.  I met her when she spoke to people at my school about trans issues.  she was an active member of the community, a brave, beautiful, and fucking fabulous woman, and I didn't know her that well but her death has me shaken up.  I had a lot of respect for her...I don't even know what to say.

of course, the newspapers in the town where she died refuse to use the appropriate gender, and furthermore they are immediately making typical racist assumptions about the nature of her religion.  She had traveled to New Jersey from Arkansas to participate in a Voodoo cleansing ritual, after the ritual everyone went to sleep, and Lucie never woke up.  The ritual had nothing to do with her death, but the headlines are reading "VOODOO CEREMONY GONE BAD!" the paper is making it clear exactly what we, the white christian public, should think about african traditional religion.

moreover the first two comments on her obituary are mocking.

if you feel so moved to let the Gloucester County Times know what you think of their coverage of this tragedy, I encourage you to comment or contact the paper.

here is the story.
and here is Lucie )

i appologise for posting here again but i just got word of this and feel you guys should know.

Ebru Soykan (28), a Turkish trans woman has been murdered on March 10th 2009 in her apartment in Istanbul. The murder on Ebru Soykan could have been prevented. TGEU demands Turkish State officials work to stop the violence against its transgender citizens and to foster legislative changes complying with the EU accession criteria.

hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of a DOR event happening in Pittsburgh, or anywhere in western PA, maybe even Youngstown, OH. http://rememberingourdead.org/day/where.html has been "updating" for weeks, and its getting close to when events happen, and would like to make plans soon. With all my efforts with our LGBTA here on campus, nothing is being done, i told them in Sept. about DOR, and said they loved the idea and wanted to do something, and now it is about a week away, and nothing is planned. The president was all like "we will do something trans related eventually, hopefully next semester. I really want to watch Transgeneration." To which I replied with, that is nice, but that has NOTHING to do with Day of Remembrance. Thanks so much.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance Webcomics Project site for 2007 is now up with info on signing up to do a memorial comic for this year. Includes a list of comics already signed up, the theme for the year, and how to sign up.

You can see it at http://www.dolari.net/dor/2007

If your favortie transgender or body swap comic isn't on the list, let them know about the event and point them to the page. We'd love to have them.

Thanks!

Howdy, everyone.

It's about this time for the last two years, I start making the rounds for the Transgender Day of Remembrance Webcomics Project, and I've spent the last few days digging up old EMails, searching out new TG comics and generally, rampping up to this years project. My apologies for taking so long to get started this year - August's been a bear.

For those of you who don't know about the project, in a nutshell, we're a group of webcomic artists and authors who put together a remembrance strip for late November. There is always a running theme, but the themes are voluntary (especially if your comic has no TG characters). If you'd like some examples of the 2005 and 2004 entries, you can see previous projects for yourself at the Webcomics DOR site at http://www.dolari.net/dor.

All we ask is that you link to the other comics running images as well, and keep the images up for your normal comic-length. We're aiming at having these displayed on the week of the 20th. After the comics are done, I'd love your permission to keep them on my Day of Remembrance site, at http://www.dolari.net/dor

This year's theme is a little less confrontation than last year's. The theme proposed is a more "This is your brain on drugs" narrative presentation. The character will very matter-of-factly decribe a situation that led to them being killed for being trans or swapped, with the final panel revealing the tombstone of that character (preferably based on someone who has died this year - a listing can be found at http://www.gender.org/remember/day/who.html).

For example, my comic will have Allison relate about a day she had where she was outted and was beaten to death over several panels. Eventually, the last panel will have her walking into the dark with the tombstone prominently displayed.

Again, the themes are voluntary, and if you have an idea you'd like to pursue, or a better idea for a theme that you'd like to present, please do.

Please let me know if you'd like to participate this year by letting me know via EMail. IF you know someone who may be interested, but isn't on this list, by all means, forward it along (especially as real life has kept me fmro researching the newer comics out there).

Thanks again for listening - looking forward to hearing from y'all soon.

Okay, now I'm incensed. Wikipedia apparently wants to delete the stub on The Day of Rememberence Webcomics project. There's some grounds that this is a vendetta against Jenn Dolari (artist of Closetspace and A Wish for Wings) based on previous articles that were nominated for deletion. Not only do I find this petty, but I think this an example of academic laziness at best. They're primary grounds for deletion are lack of notability, and lack of third party coverage.

As my Cultural Anthropology professor taught me, the one way to smash an academic's opinion is to drown them in hard evidence. The nominators for deletion did little more than to conduct a google search to find entries to the DOR Webcomics project. Given the fact the entries were image based, with filenames limited to dates and no adjoining text, any search engine would be ineffective.

How you can help
Because I have submitted entries to the project, I do not qualify as a third party. What we need to do is to go through Jenn's archive page of DOR entries. We need to match these up with the original pages on the contributing artist's site. Then, you can post the links -- or just your comments! -- at the Deletion page.

Thanks!

I attended a memorial on Monday on Transgender Day of Remembrance. It was my first time and I was moved by it. The senseless killings are, for the most part, all because we choose to be ourselves. It has strengthened my resolve to be more involved with trans issues. It has deepened my love for my brothers and sisters.

It would appear that the old Day Of Remembrance page at http://www.gender.org/ is not being updated, at least for now. The current information for this year was posted at rememberingourdead.org/, but I am afraid the move was not well publicized. Please change your bookmarks and pass this information on to any organizations to which you feel the information can be valuable.
