I recently came across a pamphlet for the Ontario Human Rights Code, and noticed a section regarding accommodation, in which it stated that "The "duty to accommodate" is the legal obligation that employers, unions, landlords and service providers have under the Code. The goal of accommodation is to allow equal benefit from and participation in services, housing, or the workplace."

I thought that this might include washroom use, and so I called the Ontario Human Rights Commission today and they confirmed that yes, a transgender individual has the right to use the washroom that corresponds to their gender identity, regardless of their physical sex. I confirmed specifically that this means that I, as a male woman, have the right to use the ladies room, and was told that another person's issue with that, should there be any was 'irrelevant'. The man I spoke to also said that it was my responsibility to educate others about this, so consider this post as fulfilling my responsibility.
