Name Change and US Taxes
Jun. 6th, 2011 06:37 pmI'm studying in England and I changed my name last year there via Statutory Declaration and was able to use that document to update my US passport and my US bank information. Meanwhile, I gave my brother the right to file tax returns in my name. He went to a tax guy and together they filed my 2010 returns in my old name, despite me having changed my name that year.
I've contacted the tax guy and he says I need to have registered my name change with the Social Security Administration. Their website says they will accept a court order as a document, but I don't think a statutory declaration counts and I can't get a US court order while I'm abroad, which might be for quite a while. Meanwhile, I will still need to file taxes in the US.
Does my name on my taxes actually have to match the name on my social security card or is there a way to file with my new name? Changing names used to be far easier in the US, so they must have some method of dealing with people who have not gone through the court system?
Thanks
ETA: They will accept a statutory declaration
