Gender Issues and Behavior Analysis...
Dec. 24th, 2003 12:53 amMy friend is in a Behavior Analysis program and one of her textbooks has a case study of Bobbie, a student who believes he is a woman trapped in a man's body and is ridiculed by classmates and family for having a feminine behavioral repertoire. He willingly undergoes behavioral therapy so he can acquire a more masculine behavioral repertoire and fit in better in society. This case study is presented as "current" treatment of a trans person, and is objectionable on many, many levels. Her essay on its failings explains a lot of this.
Her professor (who doesn't really know anything about trans issues and is slowly being educated) has agreed to incorporate some of her feedback into his next version of the book, although he is unwilling to take it out at this point. She has a revised version with her changes in color, and would like feedback on this version (and the essay). All comments would be appreciated, although specific suggestions on improving this version would be best (rather than general condemnations of the case study or methodology). Comments can be posted here or emailed to her at: etmerbitz@yahoo.com. Thanks!
