(i'm sorry in advance if this is off-topic or not suited for this community or whatever... if it is, mods feel free to delete this post.)

hey there everybody. my name is Cat and i'm a sophomore at New York University.
long story short i'm looking for someone to interview for a project for my gender studies class. all it would involve is a couple of online interviews, done via any method you would like - email, IM, LJ, whatever - between now and the end of next week. anyone who defines themselves as outside of the set societal gender norms is who i'm looking for. you can even be completely anonymous if you want.

my assignment is to write an ethnography about someone who identifies as a 'gender outlaw'.
for those of you who don't know, an ethnography (or at least, the kind of ethnography that my professor wants me to write) is a paper or essay that gives insight into a certain culture by examination of one member of that culture. the culture i am researching is, obviously, gender outlaws. ethnography is a big scary word, but it's basically just a condensed biography.

said 'gender outlaw' can be anybody, as long as they see themself as outside of the gender norms. transsexual, transgender, transvestite, gender neutral, genderless, drag king, drag queen, androgyne, two-spirits, even intersex people are welcome to do this project with me. the only kind of people that aren't quite suited to the nature of this project are gays/lesbians that do not identify as transsexual/some variant of genderqueer.

what would volunteering for this entail? well, like i said, one or two interviews over the course of the next week or so. the interviews will be fairly long, but will generally be basic questions. the questions would be about your daily life, your sexual and gender identities, living as a gender outlaw, your views about gender issues, and a few philosophical gender questions. no questions about your past or your childhood unless you feel it is important to the way you are living your life today. very easy! it can be conducted through IM, via email, through LJ, whatever you would like. if you are in the New York metro area, i can even meet up with you over lunch or something.

i will be using your interviews to write a 7-10 page narrative piece about you and your life as a gender outlaw. it will not be published unless you give me permission to do so - the only other person seeing it would be my professor. you can remain anonymous if you like, or go by another name. if you want to read the paper before i hand it in, or if you want a copy of it once it is done, that's cool too. i'm really open to any requests or needs you may have.

just a little bit about me: i'm a genderqueer, crossdressing, bisexual biological female. although i am not a transsexual, i identify with the trans community and am interested in trans issues. i have had my share of gender dysphoria and other gender-related problems and empathize strongly with people who are experiencing anguish about their gender/sex.
i don't want you to feel uncomfortable talking to me about such sensitive issues as gender and personal identity. i know how weird and unpleasant it can be talking to someone who has no idea about who you are and what you are feeling, so i just wanted to let you know from the start who i am and how i identify. i am understanding of whatever you may be going through and am not just a clueless gendernormative heterosexual girl. :)

sorry, but i only need one person for this. i will choose on a first-come, first-served basis. so the first person to contact me that i feel fits best to the nature of the project will be the person i interview. i changed my mind about this one. :) while i can only do my project on one person, two of my classmates are having trouble finding someone to interview and might be interested in interviewing people who reply to this post.

if you're interested in participating, you can contact me by replying to this post, posting in my LJ ([livejournal.com profile] thegreycoin), or sending me an email. you can reach me at either of the two following email addresses:

thank you so much everybody! :)
