Gender in the workplace

transI guess this could also equate to gender issues when at school, etc..
I find quite often that the most sweetest of people will come up to me and start chatting with me - and today was no exception. Being in my early twenties - I guess I tend to look like an adolescent still - and I had someone in his mid 40's telling me how/what I'd have to deal with when I ended up with a wife and 1.5 kids. Erg...I really had to just grit my teeth. Later in the day I had someone passing through ask me if I spent the valentine's day with my girlfriend or 'hunny'
It wouldn't have been so bad if she had just used 'hunny' ..but why do so many folks assume that everyone follows the usual boy-girl - or that every guy is a guy and thinks guy stuff and vice versa for girls. It wasn't just one sting in the face but two, today..in what would have been an otherwise calm day at work(heaven forbid!). *Whurf*
It's kind of ..well.. I don't know what the words are..but when you're talking to someone as a brief interlude in the day - somebody you've never met..isn't a bit presumptuous to assume things as detailed in my paragraphs above?
As for the latter incident..
1.) Not everyone male/female necessarily feels that such is their true gender.
2.) Not every male/female desires the opposite gender.
3.) There are some people who - for reasons varied..simply do not have anyone
to be with on days like Valentine's day.
I was nice about everything on both counts..but it just gets my tail, so to speak..to have to deal with this kind of discussion day in and day out at work. I almost want to say it's harassment - because it truly really bothers me since I tend to deal with it on a weekly basis..but the people in question are nice and well meaning..and well.. I guess mainstream society just tends to have a centralized image of how John or Jane Q. Citizen is supposed to be like, inside and out.
Life's really got me by the tail, it seems. O.o ...but hey..it's Friday.. I - and so many others..can be thankful for that..at least.
