I realize this could be a spoiler for some people, and it could be a touchy subject for some - involves anti-trans violence, albeit fictional. So I'm going to cut this.
I am watching Nip/Tuck, which I have seen once or twice before. I know they frequently have trans-related plots, and there was a recurring MTF character (I think played by Famke Jannsen?) for a while who has died. Her ex-bf only just found out she was trans, and he's upset by it and confused about his sexuality. He went to a trans hangout and ended up going back to some girl's house. He's about to go down on her and suddenly jumps back and yells "you didn't tell me you were pre-op!" She tries to calm him down but he ends up throwing her across the room, kicking her as she lies on the floor, and then kneeling over her and punching the shit out of her.
As I was watching, I felt sick to my stomach, and I figured out why. Most things on TV are fake. They are actors, acting. Blood isn't real, punches aren't real, etc. This blood, these punches, were also fake. (I believe the actress really was MTF though.) But this kind of thing happens every day. Only some of the "gay panic" or "trans panic" cases (like Gwen) make it into the press. I couldn't suspend my disbelief for that scene, because women are getting mistreated every day for "not telling the truth" or "leading him on." It's fucked up.
At the end of the show, the girl rounds up some of her friends (who are also trans) and finds the guy. She and her friends chase him down, throw him to the ground, and kick and punch him. And then they all open their flies (she wriggles out of her panties, it was cute) and pee on him. Not an appropriate response, necessarily, but one I imagine many victims of abuse can identify with.
Did anybody else see this episode?
