I've been around trans people for over 4 years (although I didn't actually transition until last year) and in that time I have heard various people's perspectives on GID. One of the most common I hear is one that seems to be closely related to BIID -- Body Integrity Identity Disorder, a form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Pretty much, people with BIID want limbs removed. In comparison, some people who ostensibly have GID want their penis removed (I only presume to speak for MTFs here, I haven't noticed as much neuroticism among FTMs but that may just be because I don't have as much experience with guys). In some cases, it seems to be even more important that the penis be removed than a vagina be created. Sometimes, it seems to be even more important to people than living as a woman.

One example of this fixation is Gabbie from "Transgeneration" ([livejournal.com profile] chaopsychochick). I normally wouldn't point out individual people but I just watched the newest episode last night and she even left a party to go play video games instead -- she blamed her penis for making her too uncomfortable to socialize. In each episode, she's fixated on her surgery to the point of falling behind in school and being asocial. Her friends keep making comments to the camera about her fixation and her irrationality. According to Gabbie, after surgery she felt so much better and was able to socialize -- this is similar to the few reports of people with BIID who have had limbs removed.
