The job was listed in Sunday's New York Times and I have listed the complete job description below. Position Title: Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counselor
Reports to: MHSS Team Leader
Position Summary: Will be responsible for providing counseling, training, and outreach services through the Center's mental health and substance abuse prevention and intervention program, including HIV/AIDS-related prevention & intervention services.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct Services:
· Respond to telephone inquiries, screen potential clients of Center mental health and social services programs and make appropriate referrals to programs within and outside the Center
· Provide one-on-one sessions with individuals and couples for intake, assessment, counseling and referral and do follow-up encounters in person or by telephone, as necessary
· Provide peer-based transgender counseling and support services
· Lead or co-lead psycho-educational support groups for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender clients including recovery maintenance, health and mental health promotion, and HIV concerns at on- and off-site locations
· Develop off-site outreach strategies, support groups, and community and professional training programs for providers and consumers
· Assist in planning and development of mental health and social services activities, groups, and workshops, including the production of outreach and educational materials
Support Services:
· Document all client sessions and follow-up encounters using the appropriate forms, case file format, computer database and provide other written documentation of program activities and proposals, as necessary
· Assist MHSS Team Leader in professional presentations and training, in disseminating educational materials and set up for mental health and social services activities
· Participate in weekly general staff meetings, regular Mental Health and Social Services meetings and regular meetings with the MHSS Team Leader for supervisory and program planning purposes
· Participate in program-relevant training workshops and seminars
· Other duties as required
Position Requirements:
· Three years minimum experience in the provision of alcohol and drug abuse and mental health counseling.
· Demonstrated self direction and creative skills in the development and provision of outreach and training services.
· MSW or CASAC preferred; fluency in a language other than English a plus.
· Experience with LGBT issues and LBGT communities.
· Knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues
· High sense of personal cause and commitment to the Center's mission.
