OK...what the fuck?! That's so fucked up it's not even funny. News articles are supposed to be written objectively, but this one clearly was written with an opinion (and a stupid one at that) already in mind. This narrow-mindedness of the author of this article left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The author is trying to justify the brutal killing of an innocent *person*. What the fuck does it matter what gender the person was who got killed? The fact of the matter is, an innocent person was killed. Brutally. Don't try to justify the murders' actions, because try as you might, you can't. Don't use the gender of the victim to justify their actions, their anger or anything else. To do that suggests that the victim was misleading the murderers in some way (which is precisely what people in my class tried to say about this exact same thing) by making herself out to be the gender she identified with. Why is that wrong? Is it wrong to want to be who you are? If that's wrong, if that should be punishable by death (a brutal one), then why aren't more people dead or dying? And not just trans people, either. Everyone. Almost everyone would like to be able to, or does, want to be who they are. So if that is wrong, then everyone should be dead. If that's wrong, then one should not discriminate against who should be allowed to do, wear, say or act like what.

"Obviously the men should be held accountable to some extent, but it's fair to say they were not in a normal mind set when they acted.

They were probably "temporarily insane" -- they did just find out that they were tricked into having sex with a man.

The police did not stop at murder, however.

They are trying to get a sentence extended by claiming the men committed a hate crime.

This is absurd.

A hate crime is a crime committed because of a person's race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion and/or handicap status.

That means the underlying reason for the beating was Araujo's sexual orientation. And that is not the case.

The men did what they did because Araujo violated them.

He used lies and deception to trick them into having sex.

He was not honest with them and had he been, none of this would have happened.

A hate crime should not even be considered. No one killed him because he was a cross-dresser.

These men were truly violated.

They were raped.

If a woman is raped and kills her assailant, would she be charged with murder?

No."

Further proof that the author of this article is a complete and utter dumbfuck, and is going on personal opinions and tastes rather than cold hard FACTS.

I'll elaborate on this later...
