Equality Bill (UK)
Apr. 21st, 2009 11:22 amOne of the criticisms of the forthcoming Equality Bill in the UK has been that it would offer protection only to those people who had permanently transitioned from male to female or vice versa , or who were in the process of doing so. In other words, it omitted protection for the genderqueer and others who don't fit the male/female binary. I now see from this website that protection will also be "extended to cover ‘affiliation’ with the transgender community. Given that transphobic discrimination occurs just as much to those considering or beginning gender reassignment as to those who have already undergone reassignment, this will be an important part of tackling inequality and levelling-up the law to align with other forms of protection."
Has anyone got any information about this provision? Is it new? Is the interpretation of it offered here accurate? Would it cover those previously omitted from the bill's protection? Any information welcome!
