Finding a therapist

transI'm having some (okay, a lot) of trouble finding a gender therapist in my area. Mostly because I'm not really sure how to go about looking for one. Can anybody help me out here? How did you find your therapist?
I'm going to be seeing my doctor (/GP/physician) in a few days. Might she be able to help me? Is recommending therapists for particular issues something that physicians do? (I live in the US.)

EDIT: Thanks guys! I talked to my doctor today and she confirmed that there are none in our immediate area, but a few in Boston (we're pretty close). I don't feel comfortable driving into the city yet, so she's setting me up with a more general therapist to see how that goes.
