Confession: I really like the Phantom of the Opera. I am a cheeseball.
Deeper confession: The Phantom of the Opera always reminds me of being transgendered, in an exaggerated, made-into-a-musical way.. man is 'disfigured', cant have woman, cant even be considered a normal man, cant have sex, is bitter, angry, and all around upset about the situation. The song Music of the Night reminds me of what its like for me to have sex, or lack thereof, with a woman, lines like "close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth, and the truth is not what you want to see. In the dark it is easy to pretend that the truth is what it ought to be." Cornier yet, lines from the last act to which Phantom utters "this fate.. denies me the joys of the flesh". Oy. I feel like such a dork.
Anyway, then I also get annoyed realizing that I have little else to look for in the media.. other than the obvious true and depressing Boys Dont Cry, and the IFC favorite documentary You Dont Know Dick, the only other thing I've seen even mention the transgender state of affairs is friggin' Loretta in Monty Pythons Life of Brian. There must be some fine pieces of art I'm missing here, and please don't mention Hedwig, it was very cute, but not about a transgender person.
