Even This Way


Waddling up to my dorm room mirror
After a day of difficult breathing
Breasts and body bound down
Layer by layer
Shirts come off
Ace bandage revealed
Unwrap slowly
Slowly
Hanging on to that flat image
One arm over my chest
And raising the other
To examine tender red marks
I feel a hand on my back
Yours
Soft and warm
And as I cup my breasts
In tightly clenched fingers
You bring your hands to my sides
One by one
Gently you massage
Running fingertips over redness
Recognizing their pain
And hopefully their worth
You kiss my neck
As if to say
"You're beautiful
Even this way"
