Hello --

I'm sending this out to a really big list of supporters, so if you're getting this and you can't figure out why, it's because you in some way offered your support to the effort to end the policy barring trans women from attending the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival (MWMF) or you're otherwise involved in the issue. If you don't want any email about this, just reply and let me know. If you *do* want more updates, be sure to sign up by sending an email to camp_trans-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, or joining here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/camp_trans/ .

Camp Trans 2003 will run from August 12-17. There are new planners involved, and we're refocusing Camp Trans on it's original purpose - ending MWMF's policy of discrimination against trans women. Held up as a prototype of women-only space, MWMF sets a transphobic standard for women-only organizations and support services across the country.

I'm sending this email because we need you! Many of you have asked what you can do to help change the policy. Now's your chance! Here's what we need:

1. Supplies we need donated:
+ walkie-talkies
+ food
+ camp stove
+ safer sex supplies
+ tarps, rope, and tents for communal spaces
+ medical supplies
+ markers, paint, posterboard, fabric for banners
+ lighting (electric floodlights, tiki torches)

2. Money!
For incidental expenses, getting speakers to Camp Trans, etc. Donate it if you have it, raise it if you don't! Throw a party and charge donations! Many towns have ongoing queer or women's events that donate money to different charities -- ask if they'll give their proceeds to Camp Trans. Or just ask each of your friends to give a few dollars, and use it as an educational opportunity to talk to others about the exclusion of trans women from women's communities. If you don't want to donate directly to Camp Trans, fundraise for expenses and transportation to help more people attend.

3. Radical people with things to say!
If you want to lead a workshop or know of someone who should be speaking at Camp Trans, tell us at ctplanning@strap-on.org. Topics we'd especially like to see discussed include: ways of working in coalition with other struggles; exploring politics within and among trans communities; trans intersections with race, disability, and class; sexuality; reproductive freedom; new strategies for change; etc.. We're also trying to arrange training sessions in grassroots organizing, so that attendees can take new skills back to their communities and put their ideas to work. If you're a seasoned organizer or experienced trainer, email and let us know what sessions you'd like to do!

In the past few years, Camp Trans has been attended and organized by more people on the FTM spectrum. This year, we really want to see trans women at the center of the event. We strongly encourage trans women to lead workshops and share their visions and strategies for change, as well as people of color, people with disabilities, and all people who have not found their issues represented in other trans organizing projects.

4. We need YOU to make Camp Trans a success.

Updates and discussion can be found at camptrans.strap-on.org. To subscribe to the Camp Trans listserv and receive more updates, send an email to camp_trans-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or join here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/camp_trans/ .

Can you come early to help set up or stay late for cleanup? Do you have a truck? Are you a performer who'd like to play at Camp Trans? Can you bring food or camping equipment? Are you familiar with the issues and comfortable enough talking with others that you could help us work the line before the festival? If you want to help make Camp Trans happen, send your name, phone number, and what you'd like to help out with to ctplanning@strap-on.org.

Thanks again for your support!
