need advice for applying to jobs
Nov. 18th, 2003 03:46 pmHey,
I am NYC trannie girl who is currently struggling to get a job and I am looking for some advice to fix the situation. As of late, i have been applying to a lot of jobs in higher education and the general non-profit world. In my cover letters i mention the fact that i am a transgender woman. I do this because i want to avoid awkard interviews where the employer becomes horrified at the sight of trannie walking into hir office. I figure that if the person knows in advance and hiring a trannie is a problem for hir, ze will just not give me an interview to begin with and everyone's time will be saved.
However, i recently talked to a friend about this and she said that my strategy might be flawed in that many people probably don't even know what transgender means and that employers who are like that might get scared off by the term. She also said that even if people are shocked upon seeing a trans person walk into their office, the interview itself might open their minds.
So, what do all of you think? In general, is it a good thing to out oneself in the cover letter or should one wait till the actual interview? I don't pass at all so the potential employer is going to find out no matter what.
