FTM 2005: A Gender Odyssey is a national conference for masculine-identified people who were assigned female gender at birth. It is place for us to gather together, share our lives, speak our truths, learn from one another, and celebrate our communities. This conference offers workshops addressing the practical aspects of trans lives, including: legal issues; intersections of race and gender; coming out to family and friends; transitioning at work; hormones and surgery; and dating, sex, and relationships. Accompanying events include a vendor fair, art exhibit, cabaret, all-ages dance, and much more. The conference will be held on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2nd-5th.

Some friend of mine told me the other day "Kali, you could never really be a guy." Why? A couple of reasons made sense: you're too pretty, too petite, and your hands (apparetly are girly, which I can understand). But then there's some bullshit about how I don't think like a guy.

So here's the question: How does a guy think? Saying all guys think about is sex and cars is like saying all girls think about is boys and makeup. And I don't think either is true, although sometimes it seems like it, in which case I say screw gender identity I'm moving to India to be a sexless third-gender.

But seriously, am I less "manly" because I'd rather cook than fix a car? Because I do my own laundry more than once a month? Because I have some semblance of personal hygene? Because I can spell?

I'm sorry but the guys I hang out with like to brush their teeth and watch Annie every once in awhile. Are they not men then?

And is gender identity really so caught up in sexuality? If so, why doesn't every gay man dress in drag? Why do some lesbians wear makeup? I guess thats why the word "transgender" is more popular. Because honestly, I'm not interested in sex. I'd be happy as a guy as much all alone in my room as I would be in a crowd of girls or guys.

And anyway, if I "can't be a guy" why do I have to be a girl? I can be a snail if I want! *packs for India*

I feel better now.

oh my god.

.. i have an appointment on april 5th. !!

i received a letter from the gender identity clinic at the center for addiction and mental health in toronto today informing me of this, and cried like the overly emotional being i am.

this is a huge shock, in the absolutely best way possible. i only just mailed them back the questionnaire they sent me, and the short autobiography concerning my gender issues that they asked me to write, just a few weeks ago.

they said their waiting period was four months. i wasn't expecting to get an appointment until at least june or july.

this is horribly exciting. i will be assessed by two psychologists, a psychiatrist, and an endocrinologist.

eep?
