Trans 101

Hi! This is my first post to this community, though i've made comments here and there in the past. i'm in need of some assistance.

i'm trying to put together an informational presentation for my campus' GLBT group, Pride Alliance, about transgender issues (Tentatively titled Trans 101). i'm the only transperson in our group, and at times it seems like people don't really understand why there's a "T" in the "GLBT" spectrum. The idea i have at the moment is to open with a basic "This is what Transgender means" (exploring the many and varied answers people have to that question), then possibly moving on to some more specific issues.

i'm just one person though, and i'd prefer my presentation to be less "This is what i think it means", and have more concrete information. Does anyone have some good sources of information from professionals and activist groups that i could use for such a presentation?

Also, i'd like to include a selection of photos of transpeople, just to lend a face to what i'm talking about, and to illustrate the diversity of our group. (Most people hear "Trans" and think "Jerry Springer"... i'd like to help that stop.) If you could point me toward professionally taken photos of transpeople that i could use, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Write, Call, or Email Senators Kennedy and Smith- TODAY!

In May of 2005, longtime advocates for the hate crimes legislation Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-MA, and Gordon Smith, R-OR, introduced the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2005 (LLEEA). While PFLAG supports the goals of this hate crimes legislation, we are concerned that this Senate bill does not include language that explicitly protects the transgender community.

Just recently, on 14 September 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives surprisingly passed a hate crimes bill that does specifically include the transgender community. PFLAG has consistently advocated for hate crimes legislation that includes "actual or perceived sexual orientation AND gender identity" in order to include ALL of our loved ones. This House bill does exactly that and PFLAG is now thrilled to be fully supportive.

Now we need to make sure the Senate version adopts the wording of the House bill.

Please contact Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and Smith (R-OR) today and urge them to adopt the transgender inclusive language that is used in the House version of LLEEA. We must work to make sure that when hate crimes legislation is passed it provides protection for all of our loved ones!

Take Action NOW on Hate Crimes Legislation!
