transI graduated in May with a BS in Human Services with minors in psychology and sociology. I am posting here now because I am very interested in working professionally with the transgender community in some way. I was planning to relocate to San Francisco after graduation but after visiting and looking into different agencies (and loving it there) I decided to remain in Boston and try to find a position with the community.
I chose to spend two semesters [versus one or none] at an internship at a Women's Center which had just adopted a new policy allowing for trans women to benefit from the services provided by the Center. I chose this internship initially because of my strong desire to work with the trans community and because I felt as though the Center [which had only allowed biological females within its walls since 1976] could use a dedicated and compassionate individual to help with the transition.
I ended up becoming a member of the Center's Transgender Transition Committee, gathering many resources, contacting a large amount of individuals whom support the community in various ways, and creating a resource binder of services among other things.
At the end of my first semester I realized that there was still so much work to be done in order for an accepting atmosphere to emerge and so I petitioned my school to allow me to continue on into my senior year rather than choosing a new internship. I am still a member of the Committee and plan to remain as one as long as I am in Boston.
I am interested in working with the trans community in general and am open to different types of work which could benefit the community. I am incredibly dedicated and a hard worker willing to take on various challenges. I was hoping that you might have some ideas. If you have any at all, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
