If you have had problems with insurance providers based on your actual or perceived gender identity, especially in regards to transitioning, please take a moment to contact the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, and tell your story. There is a bill pending in California that would prohibit such discrimination, and they need testimonies about actual experiences, so that they can provide evidence of why such a bill is necessary. It is possible to participate anonymously.

Greetings:

There is a bill pending in the California Assembly that would prohibit insurance carriers from denying coverage to transgender people that are routinely paid for in those who are not trans, or gender variant (such as not covering high blood pressure medicines to FTMs or MTFs who may have hypertension as a result of hormone treatments, or not paying for treatment of an abscess at the site of a hormonal injection, or not covering a hysterectomy in an FTM who has gynecological need of that procedure, such as fibroids or polycystic ovaries) This should include those who have been denied coverage at all because they are transgender or in transition or planning transition, or are gender variant, like butch women.

We are looking for anecdotal testimony from anyone who may have experienced such denials of coverage, based on their actual or perceived gender identity, by insurance carriers.

Please have folks send their stories (anonymous if so desired) to my attention at this email address by no later than Friday, April 15, 2005. Or, such testimony can be faxed directly to me at (415) 431-5764.

Please send this request out to your list so that we may survey as many potential witnesses as possible.

Thanks for your help in this regard!

Best wishes, Marcus
