What is the film about?

"The Making of a Hybrid Male" written and directed by Spy Dénommé-Welch is a 20 minute film exploring the personal experience of a Two-Spirit and Transgender identity. Through a naturalistic and ethnographic, yet stylized lens, this film unveils some of the circumstances that are unique to Two-Spirit and Trans people. In this film, the viewer experiences the filmmaker's exicting and worrisome journey as a Two-Spirit (Algonquin/Chippewa) Transman. In making the long quest home to northern Ontario to visit family, after starting a physical transition, we get to experience the struggle that there is in trying to explain to others this beautiful identity that, according to historical teachings, was at one time a highly-respected and traditional role held among the First Nations. Meanwhile, the viewer experiences some the imminent changes that are the result of having started hormone replacement therapy while in synchronicity to the fear of rejection that emotionally accumulates.

While this film has been shot and edited over the span of about 10 months, it integrates and documents aspects of the physical change through this subtle art medium. The film incorporates some cultural signifiers that helps to reclaim, re-identify and reaffirm the Two-Spirit identity, while reflecting this through a contemporary perspective. As this film embarks us on to a tense journey, we are possibly left with as many answers as we have questions that provoke us, as a viewer, to question our own tolerance.

Further information about this event can be found below. I wish you all well and hope to see you soon. Mino ya win!!! (Be good!!!)

Meegwetch,
Spy
