i'm applying to phd programs in linguistics, and i'm agonizing just a little about checking the m or f box. they're online applications, so i can't leave it blank.

i've undergone some amount of medical transition, and legally changed my name, but i haven't gone to the trouble of changing the sex designation on my legal documents.

here's the thing: i'm not really interested in being stealth, and i don't mind coming out to prospective departments. but i would prefer to come out to them after having established myself as the gender i look and sound like, instead of fighting an uphill battle against their mental image of my birth sex.

my question is this: what are the legal implications of checking that damn box? i'd like to know what kind of risk i'm taking when i tell them i'm male but social security says i'm female.
