I posted this on my
qfyd blog and thought that it wouldn't actually be too out of place to crosspost it here.
Okay, so following on from the advice decided MONTHS ago by Josie, I have looked into some local amateur theatre groups.
The basic idea is that having no local friends (local as in Sheffield) with whom to be myself I am forced to go to Leeds (minimum) to even get called Stacy. Rather than just go out to meet local friends the idea was hurled up that perhaps finding a shared interest group would be a good starting point, and Josie suggested giving my confidence a wallop into gear by aiming towards amateur dramatics.
Well why not? I like the theatre, and we know I can perform (no potency puns please) so it seemed a perfect combo. Josie also mentioned that theatre groups tend to promote liberal thinking and therefore was likely to be transphobia free.
I sent an email to a group today and in hindsight I think perhaps I have been a little overly paranoid on finding out if they're transfriendly... do I come across a little... twitchy do you think?
Hi there,
I was wondering if I could get a little more information on your group, but
first allow me to introduce myself.
I am a male to female transsexual very early in transition, still
presenting to my workplace and some of my family under my old male name and
such. My friends told me that I could use a confidence boost and that
amateur dramatics or local theatre groups could present an opportunity for
me to meet new people who didn't know the old me and help build confidence
in myself via involvement in a performance environment.
Having searched many websites of local theatre groups, yours was the one
which stood out, mainly because of your claim to being very friendly and
the variety of material you perform.
As you might imagine, one has to be rather careful in my situation when
choosing new friends, as the transgendered community is often met with
mistrust (and occasionally disgust) by folk who are ordinarly the most
pleasant people on the planet.
As such I just wanted to find out a little more about the group and whether
you would have any qualms about me coming along to a meeting with an
interest in joining at some point.
I'm not suggesting you might be the sort that turns folk away but if any of
your group are of the "not want your sort round here" mindset, I'd rather
know now and not come than get thrown out and called a fruit.
Also, if I am welcome, it occurs that your website doesn't actually say
when you meet. It gives a location but no time.
Thanks for your time whatever your decision.

Am I a daft moo or what?
