International Trans Day of Remembrance 2006

In preparation for the International Transgender Day of Rememberance, I have been trying to track down those killed since November 20th, 2005. Here are the names and information I have found thus far. If you know of others to add to this list, or of more information about any of the people listed, please let me know.

Alexis L. King
shot to death on February 3rd, 2006 in Nicetown, Pennsylvania PA

Alexis held odd jobs, including teaching children about asthma and speaking to gay teens about HIV, before moving out of a shared home about a year ago. She eventually ended up living on the 3800 block of North Darien Street with other transwomen.

Her killer, shot King before dawn because he was outraged to learn that the woman he had hired for sex “was a man,” he said

Her killer was 18-year-old Terron Oates, captured at the scene.

On a byway just north of the Germantown Avenue-Broad Street nightlife corridor that is listed on maps as a street but is little more than an alley - officers found King with a bullet wound on her left side. She was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 7.

None of King's roommates at her former home on Darien Street would comment on what happened to her. When asked, a person came to the window and with a gentle voice politely said: "I'm sorry, but we're resting right now."

Tiffany Berry
Shot three times in the chest on February 9^th, 2006 in Memphis, Tennessee

Tiffany Berry, 21 years old, was shot and killed at the Camelot Manor Apartments
in South Memphis when she stepped outside for some fresh air. About that time, neighbors say they heard about five gunshots. Minutes later, Berry stumbled up to the house looking for help and then died inside a short time later.  

 

Police called the crime a robbery-homicide, though friends disagreed. A friend who saw Berry's body shortly after the shooting doubted the police, “She still had her purse and everything. They shot her in the chest. They shot her three times. I'm sure they would have taken the purse,” the friend said.

 Memphis police would not comment about her being transsexual because they said it had nothing to do with the case.

beaten and stoned to death by a group of teenaged boys

Gisberta, a homeless Brazilian HIV-positive transsexual immigrant who had drug problems and was a sex-worker, was found dead on the 22nd of February inside a pit 10 meters deep, in an unfinished building in Porto, the second biggest Portuguese city. The crime was confessed to by a group of 14 boys, between the ages of 10 and 16 years old, most of whom came from a child protection institution belonging to the Catholic Church, although financed by the state.

 

Gisberta had a deeply fragile health condition, and these boys, frequently harassed, insulted, and chased her. On February 19^th, a group of these boys entered the unfinished and abandoned building where Gisberta was staying, tied her up, gagged and assaulted her with extreme violence, kicking her, and beating her up with sticks and stones, burning her with cigarettes, and sexually assaulting her.

On February 20th and 21st, they returned to the scene and repeated the attacks. By dawn, from the 21st to 22nd, they finally threw her into the pit, attempting to hide the crime. Her body was found submerged in the bottom of the pit; she died drowning.

Shot to death

 

22-year old Melissa was murdered in Phoenix, AZ on Monday March 20, 2006.  She was walking with a friend near the intersection of Indian Bend Road and 35^th Avenue when someone approached her and confronted her.  She was shot in the back and killed.

Lezlie Anne Field

shot twice in the chest on August 2nd, 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand

 

Lezlie, 31 years old, was an American who worked as an English teacher in Bangkok. She was found dead in her apartment after having been shot twice in the chest. She was found on her living room sofa with a faked suicide note. Lezlie had lived two years in her apartment, which she had shared with a Thai friend.

 

Romina Preciado

Romina, 26 years old, was shot at about 4:30 a.m. in the hallway of an apartment in the 800 block of South Westlake Avenue, Los Angeles. Two men approached her in the hallway of the apartment building as she returned home from a night out. One of them produced a firearm and took her purse. She was forced to knock on the door of the apartment. Her brother opened the front door and was assaulted by the men, but not injured. Romina tried to run and was shot.

Three year old died in the hospital after suffering massive internal injuries from being kicked, punched, and dropped on the head while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, Alex Mendoza, in an attempt to “toughen him up.” Alex Mendoza was openly critical of Mikey's upbringing, calling him a “sissy” who needed to be toughened up, slapping him, and urging him to beat up his Elmo doll. “He wanted to turn him into a little soldier,” said his mother.
