Wife Didn’t Realise Husband Was a Woman

A couple enjoyed a 17-year marriage together but all those years the wife didn’t realise her “husband” was actually a woman.

The “husband,” referred to in court as Mr J, was born with gender dysmorphia, underwent hormone treatment and had breasts removed before he met and married Mrs C.

He concealed his true gender from her for 17 years, and used a home-made part of the anatomy for sex.

Now the two are fighting for custody of the child but the court has ruled the husband is not legally a “parent” of the 14-year-old daughter who was born from donor sperm.

The female-to-male transsexual is now a man under the 2004 Gender Recognition Act and can lawfully marry a woman if he wishes. But judges said that because at the time of his “marriage” in 1977 he was still a woman and so he had no parental rights.

Lord Justice Ward described the marriage as a “travesty” and said: “Many, and I am one of them, will find it quite astonishing that there was no single occasion in 17 years of life together when her eyes did not see, or her hands or her body feel, or her senses tell her that she was living with a man who had the genital formation of a woman, a man who did not simply have a small or deformed penis, but had no penis at all.”

The court did not release full names of either person to protect the children.
