Nursing

So. I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life. Have been at a crossroads since I graduated from college a couple of years ago. It's becoming clear to me that my literature degree isn't quite going to cut it for finding a job. Methinks I'm going to need to go back to school if I want to make any sort of real living. So I've been giving a lot of thought lately to what I want to do with the rest of my life (in terms of a career, of course, not transitioning). I've had some rather surprising possibilities come to the forefront, and right now there's one dark horse candidate that's making a surprisingly strong showing: nursing.

To be honest, I never gave much thought to the possiblity of being a nurse until, say, Novemberish, but it's looking more and more attractive to me. Pays decently, there's a lot of demand and probably a decent amount of job security, and--most important to me--it would give me a chance to help people. I've been looking into it, and I have a few places I can go to find answers to my questions about nursing. There's one important question, though, that I'm probably going to get answered here.

Does anyone have any idea how good an industry nursing is for transfolk? Is it a good field for transitioning? Is anyone out there a nurse? Anyone know a trans nurse? Even a cisgendered nurse?

I can honestly see it going either way. On the one hand, nurses are in high demand, and it would seem that the medical community would be more knowledgeable, and perhaps more accepting, of transfolk. It would be good to have close access to doctors and medical facilities, too, since transition comes with so many medical risks. On the other hand, it would mean dealing closely with the public, and I can imagine many people in the medical community being a bit dogmatic about transsexualism.
