research on depression in early childhood
Apr. 14th, 2009 08:32 pmAlthough this piece does not directly mention sex or gender identity, I thought it would be interesting to members. Summary: a study has shown that children as young as 2-4 are capable of feeling complicated emotions such as pride, shame, and guilt, and higher levels of shame are correlated with depression. 2-4 years of age is the early end of when some people can remember something feeling wrong, and coincidentally a period of intense gender socialization. It is no surprise, then, that failure to properly absorb those lessons by trans children during this age range might result in feelings of shame, and possibly depression.
