I created the Transgender LJ Community in order to bring together people of all genders for discussion of transgender issues. Everyone is welcome, be you transsexual, transgender, intersex, androgyne, MtF, FtM, genderqueer, pre-op, post-op, non-op, drag king or queen, transvestite, in any state of hormone treatment or lack thereof, significant other or friend, fairy, nelly, butch, femme, bear, cub, queer ally, straight ally, genderless or gender-neutral, anti-gender, third gender, two-spirit, poly-gendered, dom, domme, slave boy, slave girl, daddy, mommy, master, mistress, asexual, curious, someone who has no label, or anyone else who wants to discuss gender in an open and friendly manner. If you have a gender expression that wasn't listed in the bio or the interests list, post about it and I'll add it!

Laughing Tranny is dedicated to providing the humorous, jolly, and otherwise positive stories that are so notably absent from the internet's transgender repertoire. If you have written or want to write a story of this sort, send Art an email at vellamus@yahoo.com.

You do NOT have to be transgendered, genderqueer, queer, or even a little bit odd to submit your writing. Please do not send attachments; rather, simply insert your story into the body of the email.

Since I started this thing, I'll start the conversation.

I have observed that the transgender community is very much divided within itself. Transsexual vs. transgender vs. genderqueer. Older people vs. youth. MtF vs. FtM. Intersex vs. everyone else. Straight vs. queer.

We are already such an oppressed minority, that it seems absurd to divide and turn against one another. Does anybody have any ideas about why these divisions and conflicts occur, and how we can work to end them? Does anybody think that things should stay this seperate, and if so, why?

I have found in my time that "transgender" is itself identified differently by many people. For some it is highly political, others see it as a personal feeling and indentification, still others see it as more universal than most would accept- that we are all in some ways pushing towards a transgendered center.

I once had two classmates quietly infuriated by my audacity to contemplate IDing as transgendered.... my hair wasn't a half-inch long, I wasn't wearing BVD's. I wasn't them. In short, they held great store in the solace they found in "transgendered" and did not want it tainted or diluted by any outsider as they saw me. And I looked across the room at them (they had AWESOME minds and I loved listening to them).... and had to stop and appreciate their viewpoint.

but I still didn't agree for me. I like spreading it about... making gender seem more maliable, universal silly putty.

and so I ask- what do you see when you say transgendered?
