Feb. 6th, 2005 01:36 pmThere was an op-ed in the (Wash.) Post this morning about the issue of elementary school kids being exposed to information about transgendered folks. It was a supportive bit referring back to another op-ed which questioned whether elem. was too young to explain how sometimes men can have babies. To put it mildly, this took me by surprise. It's brought up in school?
For simplicity's sake I'll say I grew up in a cave... a military brat kind of cave. I went to military schools-- overseas, where if you live on base, there are still monthly lawn contests. Don't get me wrong, I'm firmly of the opinion that there's nothing black-and-white about gender in the military or the brat communities, but in the small bases I was at, really explicit deviance would earn you a note, not to mom or dad but to their boss, who may or may not have relocated/discharged your sponsor. So I'm a latecomer to the communities, to the idea that there are communities, and generally to the whole idea that the stuff that's been in my head for as long as I can remember isn't just in MY head.
This may be unusual, even among brats, so I was wondering- does it really get mentioned/dealt with in school? (Take 'it' to mean whatever fits your cup of alphabet soup- lgbt, is, ts, tg, gq...)
