Is it enforceably illegal to enter and use the 'wrong' public toilets, or is it merely frowned upon?

In the case of those who do not fall into a clear-cut category (specifically, one of the main two), what course of action is conventionally taken?

(Concerns partly stem from the thought experiment 'What would be done if large groups of people in one clear-cut category began using the facilities of those in the other clear-cut category and so doing caused those people trouble?'. Even though laws about public toilets have not been heard of, it seems unlikely that there would be no restraining force in such a situation, which would imply that there is a law or other force present that I should learn about rather than remaining in ignorance.)

I just saw the latest posting of a recent ruling by the New Hampshire legislature on bathrooms. Though it should be passed on here. Worth reading, and really really pissed me off.

and if you really want to be angry, read the following response to the proposal of the article:

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has added to safe2pee over the past 9 months. A few days ago we received our thousandth submission! In all we've amassed over 1038 gender neutral bathrooms in over 300 North American cities.

Also, I'm pleased to announce, we just launched an effort that will make the web site a lot more useful. You can now find locations near you by proximity, and what's better is you can do this through text message or email on  your  phone.  You text/email what you want to local at safe2pee dot org and will receive a note with the closest bathrooms (within a mile or two). In the body of the message you include:

near [address here]

examples would be

near market and castro san francisco,ca

near 1100 polk st san francisco ca

Finally, our provider updated the PHP version on the server and that is going to make it easier to create a worldwide version and support all international locations.  When that  launches we'd love some help translating a page or two,  so if you're multilingual and would like to help, please let us know! Thanks

Hey,
I'm excited to announce that Safe2Pee, a US and Canadian gender neutral bathroom directory has just launched the BETA of a much requested bathroom by text message feature. This way you can get the info on where to go when you're on the go by SMS or email... :) In other news, we're 839 bathrooms strong, so thanks to all who have contributed.

I got a reply to the email I sent the reporter who did that atrocious story about the Kent Sate bathrooms a week or so back.

He suggested that incidents I'df mentioned were "urban legends". I replied that I was referring to info posted by the person they'd happened to.

But it's occurred to me that it would help to be able to cite real news stories (for example the ones about the trans-woman in NYC who was beaten up in the McDonald's restroom and then charged with attacking the guy who'd beaten her up).

So I'm looking for links to news stories about people being hassled for using the wrong bathroom as well as any personal accounts folks are willing to have linked.

And if someone recalls which LJ community a transwoman from Portland, OR posted about getting Mall security called on her I'd like that too. It was sometime in the last month or two

I'm hoping to ram this reporter's prejudices down his throat

I'm the first person to transition at my school. So it's often kind of like pathfinding sometimes. Anyways the current problem im looking for help with is the bathroom issue. Ive gone full time recently, have been on hormones for about 8 months, and almost everyone calls me by my female name these days, or rather a cute little shortened form, except for some people at school, who still call me by my old name. Unfortunately my old male name is still what apears on the rolls at school, so i'm always getting sir'd or mr'd by the teachers. So I've been using the female bathroom, cause ya know I'm a girl, im dressed like a girl, and these big almost size b waterballoons on my chest scream GIRL. Anyways aparently someone doesnt quite like this "opinion" and complained, cause today i was asked to come to the Dean's office. There tough questions and stuff like "well what does the state consider you legally, whats on your birth certificate". Well this is a dificult question being in Tennessee. The state of Tennessee will change driver's lincense however it is to my knowledge the only state that wont change birth certificates regardless of how much surgery or other procedures you've had. So now im looking for advice on how other people dealt with this. It kind of sucks to have to drive to the nearest gass station to use the bathroom, when i pay so much to go to school there.

Crossposted to anywhere people might have advice on this.

I'll bet y'all were just dying to read another life story, huh? )

Well, now that that's out of the way, I have a couple of questions. I'm curious about some things.

If you picked a new name, how did you decide? I picked out Allen (from Kora, "back then", Greek for maiden or girl, which is possibly the most ironic thing I've ever heard in my life) because it sounds normal -- I guess I'm shooting for being a normal boy about something. I like the letters in it, and I like the way it sounds. Basically, I just think it's a nice name.

What do you call yourself? I opt for boything (because I like the way that sounds, and it's also what I call "this whole mess" when I'm talking to my friends or my girlfriend: the boy thing) or trannyfag (because being able to smile at things makes me feel better, plus it pretty much sums me up -- except for my girlfriend, but she's the only exception, and we all know sexuality can be a tricky thing anyway). I'm curious what people use for themselves.

And here's one I'll bet a billion people have asked: Are restrooms really that different? I'm tempted to assume that it depends on where you're at, but...! I always think about asking biological guys, but the answer might be skewed by the fact that they have (probably) never been in a girls' restroom. So I figure that anybody that's seen both sides will have a better idea.

In any case: this community seems friendly and, at the very least, interesting. I'm glad there are people I can relate to -- it makes me feel a lot less alone for all of this.
